A motorcycle intercom helmet can be a great way to communicate with other riders while on the open road. If you have a passenger with you, or have multiple riders on separate bikes, you will want to communicate with one another. Therefore, a motorcycle intercom system is a great way to keep in touch with your riding group. These intercom systems mount on your helmet; therefore don’t get in the way while riding. With so many choices on the market for intercom systems, which one should you choose?

First, there are acoustic motorcycle intercoms. This is the most basic intercom system available. Acoustic means, it doesn’t’ sue electronics at all; the system uses hollow tubes in which your voice travels. The system has rubber tipped tubes which go in the ear, and a mouthpiece tube which connects to a junction box for you to communicate with others. The positives of this system are no batteries or electronics to deal with, and they are very dependable. However, the system lacks amplification; you can’t adjust volume or filter wind noise. However, for a cheaper option, and if you don’t mind some background noise, it is a great choice.

Wired motorcycle helmets are another choice. These systems have wires which run from the rider and passenger to a central control box which holds the electronics and batteries. With a wired system, you don’t have to worry about external interference; and, some wired units let you plug into GMRS radio systems as well. Some issues consumers complain of is that wiring can be a pain to deal with; every time you and passengers have to get off the bike you must remember to unplug the system.

A third option is wireless intercom technology. There are four options for riders here (FM, FRS, GMRS, and Bluetooth). These options are great for those on separate bikes looking to communicate, or those with a passenger on their back, yet wish to cut out all the wiring. All four systems include a wired intercom, in the event the user wants to use a CB radio system. These systems also wireless, which is easy to use while on a long ride. The Bluetooth system is the newest model; however, the range is still fairly narrow.

No matter which choice is right for you, intercom systems are a great way for riders to communicate while on the open road, with passengers and additional bikers.
